Sustainability Indicators (1998)

The Chair of Landscape Ecology and Landscape Planning conducts a feasibility study for the Ministry of Science and Research of the State of North-Rhine Westphalia 'Sustainability Indicators as Instruments for Planning and Control'. The study aims at developing guidelines for sustainability indicators for local planning, in particular for issues arising at the level of local land use plans. The study reviews systems of sustainability indicators developed after the Environment Conference of Rio de Janeiro by national and supra-national agencies as well as by Local-Agenda activities of local governments. The 'Driving-Force-Response' model of the United Nations and the draft of an 'alternative indicator system' by the Forum for Environment and Development are two of the approaches studied. The study is to provide methodological guidelines for local sustainability indicators and derive terms of reference for a system of local sustainability indicators.
