Sustainable Spatial Development

Cities of the Future (1997- 1998)

In the field 'Cities of the Future' of the research programme 'Experimental Housing and Urban Development' (ExWoSt) of the Federal Ministry of Regional Planning, Construction and Urban Development the cities of Dessau, Güstrow, Heidelberg und Münster were selected as model cities. In these cities the recommendations of the 'Agenda 21' of the World Environment Conference of Rio de Janeiro are to be implemented and the impacts on urban development assessed in terms of quantitative objectives. For each model city a 'research agency' is to be established to provide consulting and moderation services and to monitor, document and evaluate the project for the Ministry and the Federal Research Institute for Regional Planning (BfLR). The Chair of Geographic Foundations of Spatial Planning and the consulting firms BGS (Dortmund) und DIGERUS (Münster) were commissioned as scientific advisers to the research agency of the model city of Münster.
